CHAPTER 27
LUKE
Despite Camâs stated desire to get moving, she was dragging her feet. I could blame some of it on the adrenaline from the fight the day before or the abundance of food afterward. Heck, even I felt sluggish and sore all over, and Iâd only had a sip of that devil cider. But it was more than that.
Sheâd seemed like such a closed book when weâd first met, but the more time we spent together, the more I noticed her little ticks.
Or maybe she was letting me see them. I was still on the fence about that. The woman was crafty, and I wasnât dumb enough to believe she couldnât pull the wool over my eyes if she wanted to.
I fed Kinley a few chunks of jerky and a lump of honey laced granola from my bag. It wasnât a lot of food for her, but I wasnât sure what the folks in Silva had packed for us. Plus, with the number of rabbits Iâd seen ducking behind bushes and sprinting into tiny lairs, Kinley had more than enough options for fresh meat if she got hungry.
Our bags were heavier with the food and cold weather gear the Silvanians had packed, but the added weight wasnât entirely burdensome. I tapped a hard lump pressing awkwardly against the fabric of my bag and smiled at the muffled âtink, tinkâ of thin metal. One of the villagers had thought to pack us a pot.
Cam was doing a similar, quick inspection of her bag. âYou know, when we stop for the day, we should pull everything out and see what weâre working with again.â
âMy thoughts exactly. Those folks might have gone a little overboard making sure we have enough food and such. Donât get me wrong, I appreciate the gesture, but itâs a lot more than we walked into town with.â
Cam hefted her bulging bag with one hand and rapped her knuckles on something hard and metal at the bottom of it. âYeah, Iâm pretty sure Iâve got a folding shovel in here.â The half-confused, half-curious look on her face was adorable.
âIt might come in handy, for smothering fires and the like,â I said, trying not to show just how impressed I was with that little show of strength sheâd just put on.
The woman was as fit as they came, sure, but if her bag was anything like mine, that meant it weighed a solid sixty pounds. I couldnât remember the last time Iâd met a woman who could muscle up that kind of weight one-handed.
âDo you have any idea how far we have to go to get you back to your ranch?â I asked, using the question to distract myself from thinking about what else she could do with that hidden strength.
âNot exactly.â She stood with her hands on her hips and twisted from side to side. âIâm figuring on at least a few weeks, if the weather cooperates. Snow is pretty and all when youâre looking at it through the window inside a nice, warm house, but it has a way of slowing you down when youâre out in it.
